Frozen | Film Review

In Order: Elsa, Kristoff, Sven, Olaf, Anna, Hans

When I first heard about a new Disney movie I was thrilled, the last one (Tangled) was in my opinion absolutely brilliant. However after watching the trailer for 'Frozen' I wasn't so sure, Olaf the snowman and Sven the reindeer seemed like a bit of a random add in that gave the trailer a Barbie vibe.

When I finally got around to watching it I was extremely happy that did. In just a few words I would describe it as a Disney version of a good romance movie. I'm not talking 'The Notebook' type romance just the good light hearted type that makes you laugh and cringe and get devoted to the characters.

While it is enjoyable for any age and very funny for younger kids, I believe it was intended for the Disney generation, for people who grew up with 'The Lion King' and Pocahontas etc.  This gist of this group is now ranging between 15-20 yrs old, making it the perfect target audience for messages such as your first love, the teen awkwardness, loving your family and most importantly learning to be true to yourself.

All these messages were broached in such a delightful and relateable manner (in songs) but were balanced out by humorous scenes so that the film did not come across as to heavy. The songs were amazing and since watching the movie I have been listening the the whole soundtrack on repeat, my favorite among them being 'Let it go', has already won three awards and has placed in 8 charts already. ( The link chosen has no spoilers except for the song itself) In fact the whole soundtrack was bloody brilliant, and fit the story line perfectly and left you humming the tune for hours after.

The characters were cute and easy to identify with. Elsa who is trapped within herself and conforming to the expectations and Anna who is more lonely than anything and yearning for adventure and love to make her life worth living. Deep down everyone suffers with the same implications though not necessarily to the same degree but it does allow us to sympathize with each character and what they do. It would to easy to judge how Anna lived her first love if we did not wish for the same to happen in our life. It would be easy to be angry with Elsa for how she treats her sister and becomes recluse if we did not have a part of us that wished we could do the same.

Overall the story was great, it was not slow to develop and the scripting was not cheesy as tends to happen with romance-y and Disney type movies now. The only thing that I was not so sure about and still have not made up my mind was the necessity of Olaf in the story, for sure he added comedic relief and his solo song was hilarious but the whole sideline of how he got to be real was a bit irrelevant and I think that even if it not ruin the movie it certainly did not make it either. However without him the movie would be missing something, maybe the answer would be dialing down the vibrancy of his personality, but of course it is to late for anything to change and that is just my opinion, my friend contrary to me, found Olaf fantastic.

Independent of Olaf the happy snowman the overall of the movie was flawless and I would most definitely encourage those who have not yet seen it or are hesitating to, to watch it whether with friends, family or even on your own Frozen is a movie you will enjoy.
