The Red Lipstick Trend

Red lips are everywhere from hollywood celebrities, to youtubers and even down to the regular social class, us. In 2014 the red lip was voted the most iconic beauty trend ever.

The iconic look was made famous by stars like Elizabeth Taylor and more commonly Marilyn Monroe to add sex appeal to their look. However when I dug into the internet I amazingly found outthat the dramatic and romantic red lip has been around since 3000 B.C. where gemstones or natural dyes mixed with beeswax to tint the lips of mesopotamian and ancient egyptian women. Across all cultures lip stains were used, even among the notorious geishas of asian culture, ladies bred to be aesthetically pleasing to men and the object of envy to women. By the 1500's the trend had died out as lipstick was thought to be for prostitutes and the lower class, however thankfully Queen Elizabeth I revived the lip shade. In the 1770's the british government declared that make-up was only worn by witches. From then until the 50's and 60's the main colour worn was red, drawing men's attention. Red disappeared until Madonna paired up with MAC and brought out their first lipstick line, and now red lips are everywhere. (You can read up more on the lipstick history here)

The reason this lipshade is so popular is that it reflects confidence, appeal and adventure through its bold colour. Alot of girls tell me they admire the fact that I am not scared to wear bold reds and berries and that they wish they were confident enough to do it too. However the secret is that wearing a bold shade empowers you and gives you the confidence, you don't need to be special to wear it, you can wear it whoever you are.  It can pull together a lazy outfit or complete a chic look. ( I personally love the baggy sweater, jeans, messy bun and red lips like in the picture below)

Red lips have always been around and I am sure that they will stick around for a long time yet. Its a classic look that makes you look great and feel confident and has evolved so much in its history and its production. Reading up on the history gave me a new appreciation for my favorite lipstick colour and allowed me to see past the admired celebrities we see sporting red lipstick. In the last few years the red lipstick has become a trend for everyone not only the beauty icons that we look up to, its not a slutty colour or a sign that you're a witch, its a beauty statement.
