If I Stay by Gayle Forman | On my Shelf
t has been a while since I have done a book review so today I thought I would come back and review Gayle Forman's novel If I Stay which this summer came out on the big screen. I have a strict no seeing the movie before reading the book policy so I recently sat down and spent the weekend with my nose in a book.
'If I Stay' is in my opinion a brilliant novel. The emotions told throughout the story are so raw that I found myself sobbing to the point of not being able to breathe as I identified with various characters; Kim, the Grandad, Adam and most importantly the main character, Mia. I was completely swept up by the emotional choice Mia was faced with.
Bringing forth the question of whether we get a say in dying, Gayle Forman makes us think about what we would choose. What do we have to live for? What would make us lose all hope and what would make us fight to live? She reminds us of those we love and makes us wonder how we would want them to stay or them us.
All in all this was an amazing book and the whirlwind that hit the stores when it came out was for a good reason.

If I Stay is a story about a young cellist who one day in a car accident has her family torn away from here and is face with the choice: does she stay or does she embrace death like her family. She must see friend and family continually show their love for her and relive her past in order to make the right decision.
From page one it was a gripping story line. What is so utterly fascinating is that there is no linear plot line, it does not progress towards the future but rather makes brilliant use of flashbacks to create heartfelt relationship between each character. The writing style Was unique, really capturing and portraying the personality of character Mia Makin her relatable and admirable. Gayle Forman seems to have a knack for creating dialogue and characters that are so real and even comforting, from Mia's Mom being brutally honest about teen love to her Grandad letting go of his only remaining grandchild.
