Thoughts to ponder | Luxuries

A slightly more serious blog post that will hopefully leave you with thoughts to ponder. Open your heart and your mind to the possibilities and realities of our beautiful planet.

Alright lets start this off.

So my friend just came back from a life changing trip to Africa. She plans on being a missionary there but her first trip was purely to be exposed to the harsh realities. We got together recently and she shared with me how now that she has seen how little many live with it sickens her to see our excessive lifestyle.

We started discussing about how society thrives on the desires and greed of others. How without even realizing it we waste so much and have so many unneeded luxuries. We discussed a meme that one of our friends had seen and talked about how disappointing it was that it was actually true:
We should be using that water to give to the thirsty not to poop.
I understand hygiene is important but where is the balance?
We buy and shop continually, to buy things we really don't need and that will probably end up in a box on the shelf in the closet.  I am definitely not saying not to have clothes and make-up but do you really need 6 slightly different lipsticks that are almost the exact same shade of red?

It's completely, utterly crazy that we can talk about how horrid the consumerism of society is but turn around and take part in it. My friend and I talked about how people find money (that they dont really have) to go shopping when that little money could help the needy. We then started talking about something else ( off-topic we went) and i said something to the effect of : " I love this top, i want to buy the same one in other colours." What the heck Florence! First off, no money, and secondly what about what you said not even 2 minutes ago?!?!
Our expensive habits are exactly that... habits. It's an endless cycle that drives us to selfishness and bankrupcy. How many reading this are guilty of buying something more expensive just because of the label. Worst example is toilet paper, we buy rolls that are 3 dollars more because of the "softness", okay no sand paper to the bum please, but is that really where the 3 bucks more needs to go?

So where is the line between necessity and luxury? For ever dollar we waste could we save a human's life?  Are we willing to give up our life of comfort to help others survive?
